New goal?

I learned in RW Daily today that a variety of marathon world records were set at the London Marathon on Sunday. No, I'm not talking about just the fastest man or woman. I'm talking about the fastest man or woman dressed in a variety of costumes.

I had no idea how many categories were recognized. I was aware of the "Fastest Marathon Run as a Superhero" since John watched the record being broken by a man dressed as Spiderman at the Napa Marathon (his record was broken at the LA marathon a few weeks later, then again in London). There are a bunch of interesting categories, and one in particular that caught my eye...

Fastest Marathon Dressed as a Vegetable (female)- the record is 4:06 (dressed as a carrot)! Other categories with times slower than mine: Nun, Roman Soldier, and wedding dress.

Should this be my new marathon goal?

Choosing a new goal

I need to pick a race to train for. I need to do it soon, before I lose all motivation. I have come up with a list of potential races, but haven't really decided how far into the year I want the goal race to be, or even the distance. Here are a few options:

San Francisco Half (7/31)
Windsor Half (9/25)
Urban Cow Half Marathon  (10/2)
Portland Marathon (10/9)
Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon (10/29)
Santa Barbara International Marathon (11/12)

Or, maybe I need a goal first, then a race to attempt to meet the goal. Thoughts:

Under 1:40 Half
Another sub-4 hour marathon

Weekly Summary

I did much better at getting workouts earlier in the week, then fell off the wagon again due to a blood donation. I feel lethargic for a few days afterward, and I actually had a much too high heart rate during an easy 3 mile run on Saturday. Next week will be better!

Monday: 20 minutes of weights, 10 minutes of abs
Tuesday: 5 miles on the treadmill
Wednesday: 2 miles outside, 5 minutes of abs
Thursday: Donated blood
Friday: Time off due to blood donation
Saturday: 3 miles- very hard due to blood donation
Sunday: Off

Weekly total: 10
Miles in 2011: 279

Back on track, sort of

I got back on track for my upcoming race, and hopefully can stay there. I've done weights this week, 5 miles on Tuesday, and 2 more Wednesday morning. I was planning to go to spin yesterday and run this morning (5 more), but postponed both due to a blood donation yesterday morning. I'm happy I went- I hadn't gone since starting CIM training- but want to feel a bit better before doing anything strenuous.

I'm planning to do my 5 this afternoon after work, then my weekend long run tomorrow morning (8 or 9 miles). Then, we go to Beerfest in San Francisco!

Eek- a race in 2 weeks!

Okay, it is more like two and a half weeks, but same difference.

Last year I registered for the American River Parkway Half Marathon, and then got a bad calf injury. The race director, Ken Press, was nice enough to give me a deferral to this year (which was so surprising and thoughtful), and I finally got my form and mailed it in. I am running a half marathon in two and a half weeks, and the longest run I've done since Napa is 7 miles.

Needless to say, I won't be trying to PR this race. I think it will be a good way to tune up a bit, and it will force me to try harder on my long runs and start doing speed workouts. I'm even going to the Buffalo Chips Tuesday speed workout tonight.

My goal is to finish in under 1:50, which I think is very achievable. My 3 most recent half times are under 1:50, so I have done it recently. I was trained well for each of those, but here is to hoping I haven't lost all my fitness in the past month!

Here is the course map provided on the race website:

Trying to get back on track

I did pretty well last week- 17 miles. The 3 weeks before (since Napa), I'd done 19 miles total, so 17 isn't too bad. I need to get back into running, and soon, before I totally lose it.

I've been feeling so sluggish during my long runs, and it makes it difficult to want to do much. John said he felt like he was wearing cement shoes. I felt that way too. That needs to stop.

Yesterday I started looking up races to help me get motivated. The big question is what distance I want to plan for. After talking to someone recently about marathons, I keep going back to the idea that I need to do another. It is almost like I'm not a 'marathoner' unless I do them regularly (once a year?).

I have a short list of races in 2011 that I might sign up for. I just need to decide soon, before the good races close...

Weekly Summary

Last week I did a bit better than the previous few...

Monday: Off
Tuesday: 3 miles at McKinley after work
Wednesday: elliptical and weights
Thursday: 3 miles before work
Friday: Off
Saturday: weights and 4 miles on Stonegate
Sunday: 7 miles with the Fleet Feet group

Weekly Total: 17
Miles in 2011: 269

Updated Training Log

Since I'm not training for a race, I've been a bit lax in recording my workouts and miles on this blog. To catch up, here is my activity since the marathon:

Miles Since Napa Marathon:  19
Miles in 2011: 252

That includes two 7 mile runs with the Fleet Feet Sunday Group, and a few (pretty lame) miles on the treadmill. I'll be running more soon, I promise!
